Judge Jenkins and Commissioners:
I am writing you today to demand that you cease your efforts to suppress the Christian and Jewish vote in the November election.
One of the most fundamental duties of government is to protect the right to vote of its citizens. Our laws prohibit the intimidation of voters. As such, you must ensure that no decision you make regarding the selection of polling locations intimidates voters and thus denies them of their constitutional right to vote.
Let me be clear: by choosing mosques with direct connections to Islamic jihad and terrorism as a vote center in the November election, you are engaging in voter suppression and breaking your commitment to your constituents. Many Jewish and Christian voters do not feel safe entering a mosque to vote, especially one that has a long and documented track record of brazenly supporting radical Islamic terrorism and of calling for the end of Western Civilization.
Among the three mosques you have chosen as polling places, the Islamic Association of North Texas (IANT) is the most concerning:
- IANT’s founder, Yusuf Ziya Kavakci, has repeatedly praised the recently deceased dictator of Iran, Ayatollah Khomeini, calling him a “Great Islamic Visionary.”1
- In addition, Kavakci was a founding member of the Islamic Tribunal, Texas’ first Sharia Court, which both Gov. Greg Abbott and Attorney General Ken Paxton have recently initiated formal investigations for violations of the law.2
- IANT hosted fundraisers for the Elashi Brothers as recently as 2008, one of whom is still serving a sentence in federal prison for funding Islamic terrorism.3
- Even the Left-leaning Dallas Morning News has reported in 2005 that IANT instructs youth in the teachings of Sayyid Qutb, the Muslim Brotherhood jihadist who inspired Osama bin Laden.4
It is entirely unacceptable for Dallas County Elections to use IANT, an organization that has long-lasting ties to anti-Jewish and anti-Christian terrorism, as a polling location. I am demanding that you remove it as a voting center immediately.
